India Has Never Needed a Canvas to Make Art

Long before gallery walls and glass display cases, Indian homes were themselves the gallery. Doorways carved with devotion. Lamps cast from the same ancient mould as the Dancing Girl of Mohenjo-daro. Walls adorned with cloth cut into living geometry. Floors inlaid with terracotta stories. Across centuries and across the length of this country, objects were never simply objects — they were the language through which communities expressed belief, recorded history, marked seasons, and honoured the sacred. This collection brings together a range of Indian crafts and paintings — each one rooted in a specific tradition, a specific geography, and the hands of artisans who have inherited their skill across generations.

The Object and Its Making

Every craft in this collection is handmade, which means every piece carries the signature of a human hand — not a machine setting. Dhokra metal figures from Odisha (India) are cast using the lost-wax technique, a method that has existed for over 4,000 years and traces its origins to the Indus Valley Civilisation; because each clay mould is broken to release the piece, no two are ever identical. Lacquerware, horn craft, bamboo and wood objects are shaped, carved, and finished by hand using traditional tools, with natural materials sourced from the local environment. Terracotta and stone pieces carry the weight and texture of the earth from which they are drawn. Pattachitra and Palm Leaf paintings from Raghurajpur, Puri district, Odisha (India) are painted and engraved using natural pigments and an iron stylus called the lekhani on surfaces prepared by hand. Appliqué and fabric-based wall art involves cutting, layering, and stitching cloth by hand in patterns passed down within weaver and artisan communities. In every case, the process is inseparable from the object — understanding how something is made deepens what it means to live with it.

Craft as Living Tradition

These are not reproductions of historical artefacts made to look antique. They are the continuation of living traditions — practised today by artisan families in Odisha and across India, in the same villages and districts where the tradition took root. Some of these craft forms are endangered; the number of practising artisans has shrunk with each generation as younger members migrate to cities for more stable livelihoods. Others are finding new relevance as more people seek out handmade objects with a real story behind them. Every piece in this collection is a direct contribution to the livelihood of the artisan family that made it — and a small, quiet act of keeping a tradition from disappearing entirely.

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Craft or Painting

Natural materials — many pieces are made from brass, horn, bamboo, wood, stone, palm leaf, or terracotta, each with its own natural character, weight, and texture. Slight variations in colour and surface finish are intrinsic to the material. Handmade irregularity — because every piece is made by hand, minor asymmetries, surface variations, and inconsistencies of form are expected and are the mark of authentic craft, not flaws. Scale and display — consider the scale and weight of a piece relative to where you intend to display it; product pages carry specific dimensions. Functional and decorative — some pieces in this collection, such as lamps and select terracotta items, are both functional and decorative; product pages carry specific usage notes.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

What kinds of crafts and paintings does this collection include?

This collection includes paintings (Pattachitra, Palm Leaf Engraved), metal crafts (Dhokra/brass), lacquerware, horn craft, bamboo and wood craft, terracotta and stone pieces, paper mache, appliqué and fabric art, shell and conch craft, lamps and lighting, and wall and door decor. Each product page carries details specific to that craft tradition and piece.

Are the pieces in this collection handmade?

Yes. Every piece is handmade by artisans practising their traditional craft. There is no machine involvement in the core making process — the shaping, carving, casting, painting, engraving, or stitching is done entirely by hand.

Will my piece look exactly like the one in the photograph?

Not exactly. Each piece is handmade and carries natural variations in colour, texture, surface finish, and form intrinsic to the handmade process. Product photographs are taken under controlled lighting and may appear differently across various screen settings and devices. These are not defects — they are what makes each piece genuinely one of a kind. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.

How do I know a piece is authentic and not a mass-produced imitation?

Authentic handmade craft has a texture, weight, and character that mass-produced or machine-made imitations cannot replicate. In Dhokra pieces, the surface texture is organic and slightly irregular, and no two pieces are identical because each mould is broken after casting. In Pattachitra and Palm Leaf paintings, the lines, colours, and natural pigment variations are distinctly different from printed reproductions. Minor irregularities in form, line, or colour are natural and expected. When in doubt about any piece in our collection, feel free to reach out to us before purchasing.

How long do these pieces last?

When handled and stored appropriately, handmade craft objects are built to last. Properly prepared Palm Leaf paintings have been documented to survive centuries. Dhokra metal pieces, once cast, are extremely durable. Wooden, bamboo, and lacquer items benefit from appropriate care and storage away from prolonged moisture. Care notes specific to each piece are available on the product page.

Can I place a bulk or personalised order for craft pieces or paintings?

Yes — whether you need personalised pieces for gifting, a curated selection for a corporate or institutional requirement, or bulk quantities of a specific craft, please fill up this form or reach out to us directly with your requirements and we will be happy to help.

How do I care for my piece?

Please refer to the Care Guide on your product page for specific care instructions.
