The intricate art of Appliqué (locally known as Chandua) has been practiced in Pipili, a historic artisan village near Puri in Odisha, for over 800 years. Originally created for the Jagannath Temple, this craft was used to design ceremonial umbrellas, flags, and chariot coverings during grand festivals like the Rath Yatra.
Appliqué involves cutting and layering fabric shapes—like elephants, peacocks, flowers, and traditional symbols—onto a contrasting base fabric, then meticulously hand-stitching each piece into place. While it began as sacred temple decoration, this vibrant textile art evolved over generations to include functional lifestyle products, such as purses, bags, and home décor.
