Pattachitra — Odisha's Living Art, One Brushstroke at a Time
In the village of Raghurajpur near Puri, Odisha (India) — India's first designated Heritage Craft Village — almost every family is a family of artists. Children grow up watching their parents paint before they can properly hold a brush. Pattachitra, which takes its name from the Sanskrit words patta (cloth) and chitra (picture), is not simply a painting tradition. It is a way of life that has been practised in Odisha for over a thousand years, closely tied to the rituals and stories of the Jagannath Temple in Puri. Every piece in this collection comes from that living tradition.
What Makes a Pattachitra Unlike Any Other Painting
The process begins long before a single line is drawn. The canvas — called patta — is handmade by layering cotton cloth with a paste of tamarind seed and chalk powder, then polishing it smooth by hand. All colours used are prepared naturally: conch-shell white, haritala yellow, vermilion, lamp-black from burnt coconut shell, and indigo. Brushes are made from squirrel or animal hair tied to bamboo sticks. A characteristic floral border is drawn around every painting — it is not decorative afterthought but an essential part of the tradition. Depending on the complexity of the work, a single painting can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to complete. A lacquer finish is applied at the end, giving the painting its distinctive glow and protecting it for years.
The Stories These Paintings Tell
Pattachitra themes are drawn primarily from Hindu mythology — stories of Lord Jagannath, the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, the life of Lord Krishna, and the divine love of Radha and Krishna. The style is immediately recognisable: bold, flowing linework, large expressive eyes, elaborate costumes, and compositions that leave almost no space unfilled — every corner animated with figures, flora, and ornamental detail. Odisha Pattachitra received its Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2008, affirming its cultural authenticity and regional identity.
What to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Pattachitra
Medium — Pattachitra is painted on handmade cotton canvas, tussar silk, or palm leaf, each of which has its own texture and character. Theme — Most pieces depict mythological subjects; if a specific deity or story matters to you, look for it in the product description. Size and Intricacy — More detailed compositions involve significantly more time and skill; this is naturally reflected in the work. Authenticity — Printed reproductions of Pattachitra are widely available in the market. Every piece in this collection is hand-painted by practising Chitrakara artists.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Is every Pattachitra in this collection genuinely hand-painted?
Yes. Every piece is hand-painted by practising Chitrakara artists from Odisha using traditional methods and natural pigments. We do not carry printed reproductions or digital prints.
Will my painting look exactly like the one in the photograph?
Not exactly. Each piece is handmade, and natural variations in colour, texture, weave, or pattern are to be expected — these are a mark of authenticity, not a defect. Product photographs are taken under controlled lighting conditions and may appear differently across various screen settings and devices. Natural dyes and hand-painting techniques can also result in subtle colour differences from what you see on screen. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.
How long does it take to make a Pattachitra painting?
It depends on the size and complexity of the work. Smaller pieces may take a few days, while highly detailed compositions depicting subjects like the Dashavatar or Krishna Lila can take several weeks. This time and effort is part of what you bring home.
What surfaces are Pattachitra paintings made on?
Pattachitra is traditionally painted on handmade cotton canvas, tussar silk, or palm leaf. Each medium has its own texture and character. The specific medium for each piece is mentioned in the product description.
