The name comes from the Sanskrit words patta (cloth) and chitra (picture), meaning “painting on cloth.” Deeply connected to the rituals of the Jagannath Temple, Pattachitra paintings originally served as devotional scrolls and visual narratives, used especially during the Rath Yatra when temple idols were temporarily removed from the sanctum.
