Handcrafted Indian Lamps — Light That Carries a Tradition
Every craft tradition that has ever worked with hand and material has, at some point, turned that skill toward light. Not just the practical question of illumination, but the more considered one — what surrounds the light matters as much as the light itself. The shade, the frame, the form that holds and filters it. In India, this instinct produced some of the most distinctive lighting objects in the world — objects where the craft is inseparable from the function, where the art on the surface only reveals itself fully when lit from within.
This collection gathers handcrafted lamps made by Indian artisans using traditional craft techniques across a range of materials — applique cotton, hand-painted fabric, bamboo, and more as the collection grows. Each lamp is made by hand, and the craft vocabulary of Indian artisan traditions — folk motifs, tribal art, Pattachitra imagery, applique patchwork — is present in every piece. What these lamps share is not a uniform style but a common origin: made by hand, shaped by tradition, finished by someone whose skill has been built over years of practice.
What the Craft Brings to the Light
Applique craft lamps are made using the Pipili tradition of Puri, Odisha (India) — cotton fabric cut into shapes and stitched onto a base to build bold, layered folk motifs. When lit, the coloured cotton filters light in a way that no printed or manufactured lampshade can replicate — the layers of fabric create depth, and the light catches the texture of each cut edge. Fabric table lamps carry hand-painted Pattachitra art directly onto the shade — images of Ganesha, Ramayana scenes, floral patterns, and other traditional motifs painted freehand by artisans. The translucency of the fabric means the painting glows differently when lit than when seen in ambient light. Bamboo craft hanging lamps use the natural structure and surface of bamboo — woven, shaped, and finished by hand — to create forms that cast warm, patterned light through the woven gaps. Fabric-wrapped cylindrical lamps carry folk and tribal art motifs painted or printed onto the fabric surface, wrapped around a frame to create a pendant light with a distinctly handmade character.
As this collection grows, it will include lamps in additional materials and forms — each chosen for the same reason: the craft is the point, not just the light.
Table Lamps and Hanging Lamps
Table lamps in this collection have fabric shades with hand-painted art and can be placed on desks, sideboards, shelves, or bedside surfaces. Hanging lamps are ceiling-mounted pendant fixtures — product pages carry cord length and fitting details. Bulb and fitting requirements vary by product; please check the product page before purchase.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
What kinds of lamps does this collection include?
This collection includes handcrafted table lamps and hanging lamps made from materials including applique cotton, hand-painted fabric, bamboo, and other craft materials. Sub-collections for Table Lamps and Hanging Lamps are available for easier browsing. Each product page carries specific dimensions, fitting type, and craft details.
What is the difference between a table lamp and a hanging lamp in this collection?
Table lamps have a base and shade designed for surface placement. Hanging lamps are pendant ceiling fixtures with a cord and fitting for ceiling installation. Both types are available in this collection — the sub-collections are labelled accordingly.
Will the lamp look exactly like the one in the photograph?
Not exactly. Each lamp is handmade — hand-painted, hand-stitched, or hand-woven — and carries natural variation in colour, motif placement, and surface finish intrinsic to the handmade process. Photographs are taken under controlled lighting and may appear differently across various screen settings and devices. The appearance of any lamp will also change when lit versus unlit, as the light source affects how colours and patterns read through the shade. These variations are not defects. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.
Do the lamps come with bulbs or fittings?
Bulbs are not included unless specified on the product page. Fitting type and cord length details are mentioned on individual product pages — please check before purchase.
