Handcrafted Indian Table Lamps: Artisan-Made Lighting for Every Surface

A table lamp does two things: it produces light, and it occupies a surface. The second of these is as important as the first, because a lamp on a bedside table, a desk, or a sideboard is present and visible whether or not it is switched on. What surrounds the light matters as much as the light itself, which is why the material and craft of a lampshade are not incidental decisions. Handcrafted table lamps made from natural materials, with art applied by hand by Indian artisans, carry a character that manufactured alternatives cannot replicate. They are functional lighting and collectible objects in the same piece, and they look different when lit than when seen in ambient light: the art on the shade glows through the material rather than sitting on its surface.

This collection gathers handcrafted table lamps made from natural materials across craft traditions: painted fabric, bamboo, palm leaf, terracotta, and other artisan-worked materials as the range grows. Each lamp is made by hand by artisan communities from Odisha (India), suited for placement on desks, sideboards, shelves, and bedside surfaces.

The table lamps in this collection include Pattachitra art hand-painted freehand onto fabric shades in round and square base forms. Pattachitra is Odisha's signature art form: intricate mythological narratives painted using natural colours derived from minerals, plants, and lamp soot, practised by families of Chitrakars who have inherited this craft across generations and whose tradition is closely tied to the Jagannath Temple at Puri and the heritage village of Raghurajpur, Puri district, Odisha (India). On a fabric shade, these painted narratives behave differently when the lamp is switched on: the translucency of the fabric allows the colours to glow and the painted surface to read with a depth that ambient light does not show. These are, as Taalapatra describes them, statement pieces that double as functional lighting and collectible art.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

What kinds of table lamps does this collection include?

This collection includes handcrafted table lamps made from natural materials across craft traditions. Pattachitra art hand-painted fabric table lamps in round and square base forms are available. Each product page carries specific craft, material, base form, bulb requirement, and dimension details.

How does the lamp appear when lit compared to unlit?

Significantly different. When unlit, the fabric shade shows the Pattachitra art as a surface painting in ambient light. When switched on, the natural translucency of the fabric allows the painted surface to glow, changing how colours and detail read. The piece functions as art and as lighting; the two states are visually distinct.

Do bulbs come included?

Bulbs are not included unless specified on the product page. Please check the individual product page for bulb type and fitting requirements before purchase.

Will my lamp look exactly like the one in the photograph?

Not exactly. Each lamp is hand-painted and carries the natural variation of freehand brushwork in colour tone, painted detail, and surface character. Photographs are taken under controlled lighting and may appear differently across screen settings and devices. These are not defects. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.
