Home and Living: Artisan-Made Objects for Daily Life

The objects in a home that matter most are not always the ones on display. They are the cup that holds the morning tea, the basket on the kitchen counter, the tray on the sideboard, the storage box on the shelf, the bedsheet that is on the bed every night. These things are used daily, which means they are seen daily, and how they were made and what they carry shows over time. This collection gathers handcrafted objects built for this kind of daily use: kitchen and dining pieces in terracotta, Sabai grass, and hand-painted wood; storage and accessory pieces in Golden Grass, palm leaf, paper mache, bamboo, and applique velvet; bed linen in embroidered cotton; and utility pieces that bring the same artisan standard into the corners of a home that manufactured alternatives reach without bringing anything of value. Every piece here is made by hand, rooted in a craft tradition, and suited to the rhythms of everyday domestic life.

Kitchen and Dining

Terracotta has been the material of the Indian kitchen for centuries. Handcrafted tea cup sets of six and earthen water bottles shaped, fired, and painted by potters whose families have worked with earth for generations make the kitchen and the dining table a daily point of contact with something made by skilled hands. Sabai grass bread baskets, woven from natural grass into round and oval forms in dyed colours including magenta, blue, red, turmeric yellow, peacock green, and rusty orange, carry the same principle into the kitchen as functional objects with a craft character that manufactured alternatives simply do not have. Hand-painted wooden coasters in sets of two to five carry folk and tribal motifs — dancing women, tribal women playing music, tabla, Pattachitra Radha Krishna, Saura tribal themes, elephant ride, villagers under a tree — painted freehand onto wood and fabric-coated wooden surfaces. Hand-painted decorative wooden trays carry similar folk art imagery: dancing women, groups of women with peacocks, two birds, two elephants — each painted by hand and functional as a serving or display tray.

Storage and Accessories

Handwoven Golden Grass storage boxes with lids, in round and square forms and small and medium sizes, are made from the wild grass that grows in the marshy riverside areas of Odisha (India), woven by hand into structured forms. Palm leaf utility and storage boxes in square and rectangular forms carry engraved Pattachitra art on the palm leaf surface. Paper mache utility and storage boxes in round and oval forms are made from recycled materials and natural adhesives, lightweight and colourful. Bamboo craft pieces include fabric-wrapped tissue boxes in two tribal art designs and a fabric-wrapped bangle organizer box. Applique velvet saree and dress briefcases with six compartments provide structured storage for sarees and dress materials, their exterior carrying hand-stitched applique craft work in the tradition of Pipili, Puri district, Odisha (India).

Bedding

The bedding in this collection features hand-embroidered cotton double-size bedsheets. The embroidery is worked by hand using thread in folk and traditional motif vocabularies: dancing women, elephants, florals, geometric patterns stitched stitch-by-stitch into the cotton base. Breathable and soft, suited to the Indian climate, and softening with use and washing.

Utility

A 41-litre applique velvet laundry and storage bag and bamboo fabric-wrapped tissue holders bring the same artisan standard into the everyday utility of the home. Will my piece look exactly like the one in the photograph?

Not exactly. Every piece in this collection is handmade and carries natural variation in colour, finish, surface character, and form intrinsic to the craft process. Hand-painted surfaces carry the natural variation of freehand brushwork. Natural material pieces like terracotta, Sabai grass, and Golden Grass carry the character of the material. Photographs are taken under controlled lighting and may appear differently across screen settings and devices. These are not defects. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.

How do I care for my home and living piece?

Care requirements vary significantly by material: terracotta, grass, wood, bamboo, paper mache, and fabric each require different handling. Please refer to the Care Guide on the individual product page for specific care instructions before use and washing.
