Women's Handloom and Handcraft Collection
India's handloom tradition has always dressed women with intention. The saree woven on a pit loom in western Odisha, its motifs resist-dyed into the fabric before the weaving begins, is not comparable to a printed or power-loom alternative: the process, the material, and the result are entirely different things. Taalapatra's women's collection is built on that difference. Every piece here is handmade: handwoven or hand-painted, made by skilled artisan communities using craft techniques rooted in real traditions, and chosen because it carries a quality and character that manufactured alternatives cannot replicate. The range covers handwoven sarees in silk, cotton, and Khadi; Sambalpuri unstitched dress material sets; handwoven kurtas and kaftans in Khadi fabric; handcrafted jewellery; and bags in cotton and leather. Sub-collections are organised by fabric, by craft tradition, and by occasion, making it easy to find the right piece for a wedding, a festive celebration, the office, or daily wear.
Sarees
The saree collection begins with the Sambalpuri textile tradition, one of India's most celebrated GI-tagged weaving heritages from western Odisha (India). Sambalpuri silk sarees are luxurious handwoven masterpieces featuring the iconic Bandha ikat technique, where threads are resist-dyed before weaving to create intricate patterns. Traditional motifs — Shankha (conch), Chakra (wheel), and Phula (flower) — carry deep symbolism rooted in Odia culture and temple traditions, and are crafted on pit looms by master weavers of the Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, and Balangir districts. These are genuine handloom originals where every thread carries the artisan's signature, suited to weddings, festivals, and heirloom gifting. Sambalpuri cotton sarees offer the same heritage weaving artistry in a lighter, more breathable fabric, gentle on the skin and effortless to drape across seasons. Khadi cotton sarees are handspun and handwoven in the truest Swadeshi tradition, available in earthy natural tones, carrying the quiet dignity of India's handloom movement. Pattachitra sarees bring a third tradition into this range: hand-painted mythological narratives from the families of Chitrakars at Raghurajpur, Puri district, Odisha (India), painted onto silk and Tussar silk surfaces, making each saree as much a collector's item as it is a garment.
Dress Material
The Sambalpuri pure cotton unstitched dress material sets give the wearer heritage fabric and the freedom to tailor it to their own silhouette. Each 3-piece set carries the same exquisite Bandha ikat patterns, vibrant colour combinations, and handloom texture that define the Sambalpuri weaving tradition, available as unstitched fabric to be stitched into a kurta, salwar suit, blouse, or any silhouette the wearer envisions.
Ready to Wear
The ready-to-wear range includes handwoven Khadi kurtas in A-line and other styles, handwoven Khadi kaftan kurtas with batik print, and handwoven short dresses and kurtis, designed for comfort and suited to women who value conscious fashion rooted in India's textile legacy. Khadi fabric is handspun on a charkha and handwoven on a traditional loom, with a natural texture that breathes well and softens with every wash.
Jewellery
The tribal jewellery in this collection features bold, handcrafted statement pieces made by indigenous artisan communities using traditional metalwork techniques. The Gajagamini series of Dhokra brass necklaces, made using the ancient lost-wax casting technique with roots tracing back over 4,000 years to the Indus Valley Civilization, includes choker styles, necklaces with ghungroo, and longer statement necklaces. Because the mould is broken after every single casting, each piece carries the distinct artistic signature of the craftsperson who made it: no two are ever identical.
Bags
The bags in this collection include cotton sling bags in round and bucket styles with folk and floral motifs, and a handcrafted leather handbag with folk designs, each made with traditional techniques and natural materials.

A Few Things Worth Knowing
What does this collection include?
This collection includes handwoven sarees in Sambalpuri silk, Sambalpuri cotton, Khadi cotton, and hand-painted Pattachitra silk and Tussar silk; Sambalpuri pure cotton unstitched 3-piece dress sets; handwoven Khadi kurtas, kaftans, and dresses; tribal Dhokra brass jewellery; and cotton and leather bags. Sub-collections by fabric, craft tradition, and occasion are available for easier browsing.
What is the difference between Sambalpuri silk, cotton, and Khadi sarees?
Sambalpuri silk and cotton sarees are both handwoven using the Bandha double ikat technique by master weavers of western Odisha (India): the difference is the fibre, with silk offering richness and lustre and cotton offering breathability and everyday wearability. Khadi sarees are handspun on a charkha before weaving, giving them a distinct natural texture and irregular character that differs from both. Each sub-collection page carries more detail on the fabric and its character.
How do I choose the right saree for my occasion?
Use the occasion-based sub-collections: Festive, Wedding, Office Wear, and Daily Wear. Silk sarees and Pattachitra silk sarees suit weddings and milestone occasions. Sambalpuri cotton sarees suit festive gatherings, office wear, and daily use. Khadi cotton sarees suit daily wear and carry the Swadeshi spirit into every occasion. If you are uncertain, feel free to reach out to us and we will help you choose.
Will my piece look exactly like the one in the photograph?
Not exactly. Every piece in this collection is handmade and carries natural variation in colour, texture, weave, and surface character intrinsic to the craft process. Handloom fabrics carry natural slubs and colour variation between pieces. Hand-painted pieces carry the natural variation of freehand brushwork. Photographs are taken under controlled lighting and may appear differently across screen settings and devices. These are not defects. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.
How do I care for my piece?
Care requirements vary by fabric and craft type. Silk, cotton, Khadi, and hand-painted surfaces each require different handling. Please refer to the Care Guide on the individual product page for specific care instructions.
Can I place a bulk or custom order?
Yes. For trousseau requirements, wedding gifting sets, corporate gifting, personalised pieces, or bulk orders, please fill up this form or reach out to us directly and we will be happy to help.
