About this Creation
About this Creation
Our Tribal Jewellery – Brass (Dhokra) Necklace is more than just adornment—it’s a handcrafted celebration of India’s ancient tribal artistry, lovingly moulded and finished by artisans who continue to preserve the soulful Dhokra tradition of Odisha.
Each of these necklaces is crafted using the time-honoured lost-wax casting method, where beeswax and clay are transformed into intricate brass designs that are as symbolic as they are beautiful.
What makes these necklaces truly special is the raw, earthy charm and meticulous detail present in every link, spiral, and pendant. Featuring tribal motifs, sacred geometry, and organic patterns, each piece is a harmonious blend of ethnic elegance and cultural storytelling, meant to be worn with pride and purpose.
These are not machine-pressed imitations or fast-fashion accessories. They are authentic, slow-crafted ornaments, shaped over days of patient handiwork, with every mould, pour, and polish done by hand. The result is jewellery that doesn’t just accessorise—it narrates the ancestral legacy and artisanal spirit of Odisha’s tribal communities.
Whether paired with ethnic attire or used to add bold contrast to contemporary styles, this Dhokra brass necklace radiates warmth, uniqueness, and the artistry of rural India.
Each piece is a tribute to the artisan’s mastery, the endurance of the Dhokra tradition, and the deep-rooted connection between culture, craft, and personal expression.

STORY BEHIND THIS CRAFT
The tradition of Dhokra brass jewellery in Odisha traces back over 4,000 years, rooted in ancient lost-wax (cire perdue) metal casting, a technique visible in the iconic Bronze-Age “Dancing Girl” of Mohenjo-Daro. This technique became deeply embedded among Odisha’s tribal communities—particularly the Dhokra-Damar, Sithulia, and Ghantaras—in districts like Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Rayagada.
Originally, the craft was practical: functional items like lamps, containers, ritual figurines, and tribal jewellery, all cast using a handcrafted wax model coated in clay, then fired to replace the wax with molten brass. Over centuries, artisans refined their skills, adding intricate tribal motifs, filigree, and symbols—each necklace a blend of myth, culture, and craftsmanship.
What makes Odisha’s Dhokra jewellery truly special is its organic elegance and cultural resonance. Each piece carries subtle variations—gentle asymmetry, hand-polished patina, and raw tribal charm—that mark it as a handmade heirloom, not a mass-produced accessory.
The detailed process is as below:
-
Wax Modelling
The artisan begins by crafting a detailed model of the necklace or pendant in beeswax, sometimes mixed with resins for strength and flexibility. -
Clay Moulding
Several layers of fine and coarse clay are applied over the wax model to form a hard shell. Small vents are left for the wax to melt out. -
De-waxing and Heating
The mould is heated over fire, causing the wax to melt and drain out—leaving a hollow cavity in the exact shape of the design. -
Metal Pouring
Molten brass is carefully poured into the clay mould, filling the cavity. The mould is then cooled naturally. -
Breaking the Mould
Once cooled, the clay mould is broken open to reveal the raw brass piece. No two pieces are ever identical. -
Finishing Touches
The jewellery is then cleaned, hand-burnished, and polished. Artisans may add a cord or metal chain to complete the necklace.
Today, wearing a Dhokra brass necklace means carrying a 4-millennia-old legacy—the hands of tribal metalsmiths, the fire of tradition, and the soul of Odisha’s craft revival—all fused into a stunning wearable piece.
