Indian Paintings — Art That Has Never Needed a Frame to Be Meaningful
Long before canvas and galleries, India's artists painted on walls, palm leaves, and cloth — telling stories of gods, seasons, nature, and everyday life. This collection brings together distinct painting traditions from across Bharat, each rooted in its own geography, community, and way of seeing the world. Every piece here is hand-painted or hand-engraved by artists who have inherited these traditions, not merely learned them.
Three Traditions, One Collection
Pattachitra, originating from Odisha, is one of India's oldest surviving painting traditions — practised on cloth and palm leaf, known for its intricate borders, rich natural colours, and themes drawn from Hindu mythology, particularly the stories of Lord Jagannath. Palm Leaf Engraved paintings, also from Odisha, are etched onto dried palm leaves using a pointed stylus, a technique that predates paper — the designs are then filled with natural pigments derived from sources like charcoal and turmeric. Madhubani, originating from the Mithila region of Bihar and practised traditionally by women, uses natural dyes and pigments to depict mythology, nature, and daily life through vivid geometric patterns and fine linework. All three carry GI (Geographical Indication) recognition, affirming their cultural authenticity and regional roots. As we grow this collection, more painting traditions from across India will find their place here.
Why an Original Hand-Painted Piece Is Unlike Anything You Can Print
A printed reproduction can capture colour, but not touch. An original hand-painted piece carries the subtle presence of a human hand — variations in line weight, pigment depth, and composition that no two artists will replicate in exactly the same way. These are not decorative objects produced in bulk. Each one took time, skill, and intent. When you bring one home, you bring something that is genuinely unrepeatable — and you directly support the artist whose hands made it.
What to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Painting
Tradition — Each painting style in this collection has its own distinct visual language, history, and meaning. Reading briefly about the craft before choosing helps your piece carry significance beyond decoration. Medium — Pattachitra is typically painted on cloth or palm leaf; Madhubani on handmade paper, cloth, or canvas; Palm Leaf paintings are made on dried and treated palm leaves. Knowing the medium helps you care for it correctly. Theme — Most paintings in these traditions draw from Hindu mythology, nature, and folk narratives. If a specific theme matters to you, look for it in the product description before purchasing. Display & Care — Hand-painted works are best kept away from direct sunlight and humidity. Framing under glass helps preserve the natural pigments and the surface for years to come.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Are these paintings genuinely hand-painted or hand-engraved by artists?
Yes. Every piece in this collection is made entirely by hand by practising artists from their respective craft traditions. We do not carry printed reproductions or machine-made imitations.
Will my painting look exactly like the one in the photograph?
Not exactly. Each piece is handmade, and natural variations in colour, texture, weave, or pattern are to be expected — these are a mark of authenticity, not a defect. Product photographs are taken under controlled lighting conditions and may appear differently across various screen settings and devices. Natural dyes and hand-painting techniques can also result in subtle colour differences from what you see on screen. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.

How do I care for a hand-painted or palm leaf piece?
