Straw Craft: Natural Grass Woven into Functional and Decorative Forms

Straw and grass have been worked by hand into functional objects across India for centuries, long before manufactured alternatives existed. The baskets, mats, storage pieces, and decorative forms produced from natural grass are among the most democratic of Indian crafts: the material is found in the landscape, the technique is learned through practice, and the resulting objects serve the home in ways that synthetic alternatives cannot replicate because they are lighter, biodegradable, and carry a warmth of texture and tone that comes only from a natural material worked by hand. This collection gathers straw and grass craft from Odisha (India): Sabai grass bread baskets, Golden Grass handwoven storage, coasters, bags, and wall hangings, straw craft paintings, and paper mache pieces mounted on a golden straw base.

Sabai Grass Baskets

The Sabai grass bread baskets in this collection are functional kitchen pieces woven by hand from natural grass in round and oval forms, with and without handles. Sabai grass is coiled and stitched to build the basket structure, and the pieces in this collection are dyed in rich natural tones suited to the kitchen and the dining table. The basket is light, durable, and breathable in a way that manufactured alternatives are not, and each is a handcrafted piece rather than a factory-made one.

Golden Grass Handwoven Pieces

The Golden Grass pieces in this collection are handwoven from a wild grass that grows in Odisha (India) and is named for the warm golden lustre it takes on as it dries. Golden Grass storage boxes with lids, in round and square forms and in small and medium sizes, are structured handwoven pieces suited to shelf or tabletop storage. Coasters and table mats in sets of three and four, across small, medium, and large sizes, bring the same material to the dining table. Golden Grass handbags are handwoven carry pieces where the natural structure and lustre of the grass form the body of the bag. The Golden Grass wall hanging carries musicians painted on wooden cut-outs mounted within a handwoven Golden Grass frame, combining two craft traditions.

Straw Craft Painting

The straw craft painting in this collection depicts Shri Krishna with flute, composed from golden paddy straw arranged into a pictorial form and framed. Straw craft paintings produce an image with a distinctive warm, textural quality that paint on canvas cannot replicate: the material is the medium and the colour and character of the straw are part of what is seen.

Paper Mache on Golden Straw

The paper mache Ganesha figurines in this collection are sculpted from paper mache, made from recycled materials and natural adhesives, and mounted on a golden straw base. These are lightweight decorative pieces that combine two natural craft materials in a single object.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

What kinds of products does this collection include?

This collection includes Sabai grass bread baskets in round and oval forms; handwoven Golden Grass storage boxes, coasters and table mats, handbags, and wall hanging; a framed straw craft painting; and paper mache Ganesha figurines on a golden straw base. Each product page carries specific dimensions, set size, and care details.

What is the difference between Sabai Grass and Golden Grass?

Both are natural grasses worked by hand, but they are distinct materials. Sabai grass is coiled and stitched into basket forms. Golden Grass is a wild grass from Odisha (India) that develops a warm golden lustre as it dries, and is handwoven into storage boxes, coasters, bags, and wall hangings. Each carries a different texture, character, and range of products.

What is a straw craft painting?

A straw craft painting is a pictorial composition made from golden paddy straw arranged and fixed to create an image. The straw itself is the medium: its colour, sheen, and texture form the visual character of the piece, producing an image with warmth and texture distinct from painted or printed alternatives.

Will my piece look exactly like the one in the photograph?

Not exactly. Each piece is handcrafted and carries natural variation in weave, grass tone, coiling pattern, and surface character intrinsic to the material and the making process. Natural materials like Sabai grass and Golden Grass carry inherent variation in colour and texture between pieces. Photographs are taken under controlled lighting and may appear differently across screen settings and devices. These are not defects. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.

How do I care for my straw craft piece?

Please refer to the Care Guide on the individual product page for specific care instructions, as requirements vary between grass baskets, Golden Grass woven pieces, straw paintings, and paper mache.
