Handcrafted Door Decor: Torans and Door Hangings for the Indian Home

The doorway in Indian homes has always been the place where the outside world meets the inside one, and it has traditionally been treated as a threshold worth marking. Across India, the toran — a decorative hanging placed across the top of a doorframe — has served this purpose for centuries: welcoming those who enter, marking auspicious occasions, and signalling something about the household on the other side of the door. Whether woven from mango leaves and flowers for a festival morning or crafted from fabric and thread as a lasting piece of decor, the toran is one of the most enduring forms of Indian domestic art. This collection brings that tradition forward through handcrafted pieces: applique craft velvet torans made in the Chandua tradition of Pipili, Puri district, Odisha (India), and handcrafted terracotta wind chimes that hang at the threshold with the sound of clay on clay. As the collection grows, it will include other door decor forms in additional materials and craft traditions.

Applique Velvet Torans

The torans in this collection are made using the applique craft tradition of Pipili, Puri district, Odisha (India), known as Chandua work: vibrant fabric cut-outs stitched into decorative patterns on a base fabric. The tradition is closely associated with the sacred Rath Yatra festival of Lord Jagannath, where applique craft canopies and hangings form a significant part of the visual landscape of the procession. Here, that same tradition is applied to velvet torans for the home doorway, each carrying folk and decorative motifs stitched by hand on a rich maroon velvet base. The velvet surface and the layered fabric cut-outs give these torans a depth and texture that printed or machine-made door hangings cannot replicate. Each is made by hand, and minor variation in stitch placement and fabric colour between pieces is natural and expected.

Terracotta Wind Chimes

The terracotta hanging bells in this collection are handcrafted clay pieces, shaped and fired by potters whose families have worked with earth for generations. Hung at the door, they carry the warm, grounded sound of terracotta on terracotta, distinct from metal or glass chimes, and suited to the entrance of an Indian home.
