About this Creation
About this Creation
Our Appliqué Door Hanging Torans from Odisha are more than decorative accents—they are vibrant threads of India’s living tradition, hand-stitched by master artisans from the renowned craft village of Pipili, in the culturally rich state of Odisha.
Each toran is a tapestry of heritage, crafted using the age-old appliqué technique that once adorned the royal processions and temples of Puri. In this traditional art form, vividly colored fabric motifs—elephants, flowers, peacocks, and mythological symbols—are carefully cut and stitched onto contrasting backgrounds, creating bold, festive patterns that instantly uplift any entrance.
What makes these torans truly special is the attention to detail and the spirit behind each stitch. Made from durable cotton and velvet fabrics, and often embellished with mirrors or patchwork detailing, every piece is a handmade celebration of devotion, patience, and identity. No two torans are exactly alike—each one carries the distinct signature of the artisan’s creativity and cultural inheritance.
These are not mass-produced hangings. They are authentic, hand-sewn artworks, made slowly and thoughtfully, reflecting a tradition that dates back centuries. By bringing one into your home, you're not just adding color and charm—you're supporting sustainable craft and keeping India’s rich textile legacy alive.
Ideal for festive décor, cultural corners, or as a warm welcome above your main door, these appliqué torans radiate joy, craftsmanship, and story. Whether for your own home or as a thoughtful gift, they are keepsakes that connect past to present with elegance and soul.

STORY BEHIND THIS CRAFT
The art of Appliqué (locally known as "Chandua") is one of Odisha’s most iconic textile traditions, with roots tracing back over 800 years. Deeply intertwined with the rituals and festivals of Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, this vibrant craft originated as part of temple culture, where appliqué canopies, banners, and ceremonial umbrellas were made for religious processions, particularly during the Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival).
The craft flourished in the small artisan village of Pipili, located just 20 km from Puri, which remains the heart of this heritage today. Generations of skilled artisans in Pipili have kept the tradition alive, hand-stitching colorful fabric motifs onto base cloths to create everything from temple decorations to festive home décor.
Originally, the designs depicted religious symbols, deities, animals (like elephants and peacocks), and folk motifs, all of which carried cultural or spiritual meaning. Over time, these motifs have evolved to include modern patterns while still retaining their cultural essence.
What makes Pipili appliqué truly special is not just its vivid color palette or intricate designs—but the deep cultural symbolism and community craftsmanship it represents. Every toran, wall hanging, or umbrella tells a story of tradition, skill, and devotion—stitched lovingly by hand using techniques passed down through generations.
Today, Odisha’s appliqué craft is recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged art form, affirming its authenticity and importance in India’s artisanal heritage.
