About this Creation
About this Creation
Who says everyday style can’t also be sustainable and soulful? Our Leather Hand Bag from West Bengal is here to prove that a handbag can be more than a fashion statement—it can be a testament to heritage, ethics, and artisanal excellence.
Crafted from naturally shed animal skin, each bag is made from leather that comes from animals that died through natural processes—not harmed for fashion. This means your bag is not only beautifully made, but also cruelty-free and responsibly sourced.
Skilfully handcrafted by West Bengal’s leather artisans, this bag showcases the region’s legacy of supple textures and timeless design. With their expert hands and traditional tools, these artisans transform each skin into a durable, elegant handbag. The rich hues and polished finish reflect their generosity of time and care—no shortcuts, no mass production.
This isn’t just a bag—it’s a companion. Use it to carry your phone, wallet, and that library book you’re halfway through. It’s roomy yet sleek, sturdy yet stylish, and it ages like fine wine—developing character with every use. And those who spot it will appreciate the understated elegance and thoughtful ethics behind it.
Each bag holds its own personality—variations in grain, subtle shade differences, and unique texture are all part of its handcrafted charm. No leather is alike, and that’s exactly the point.
Whether you’re heading to work, brunch with friends, or simply want a bag that reflects both style and values, this Leather Hand Bag from West Bengal brings a refined, conscious edge to your wardrobe.

STORY BEHIND THIS CRAFT
The tradition of leather handcraft in West Bengal truly took root in the 1940s around Santiniketan, when local artisans began combining vegetable-tanned sheepskin and goatskin with embossed batik and hand-painting techniques. Under the patronage of Rabindranath Tagore and supported by Visva-Bharati University’s rural development initiatives, this cottage industry grew into a celebrated handicraft tradition.
Known today as Santiniketan Leather Goods, this craft received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2007, a testament to its cultural importance. Crafted from E.I. Leather—a quality-guaranteed, vegetable-tanned material from sheep and goats—each bag undergoes a slow, artisanal process, from tanning and cutting to embossed or batik designs using natural dyes.
What makes these leather hand bags truly special is their ethical, natural sourcing and artistic detailing. Using non-cruel leather from animals that have died of natural causes, each bag is meticulously washed, hand-moulded, embossed, painted, and then polished to a soft sheen—a process guided by age-old tradition and Tagore’s vision of sustainable craft.
Owning a Santiniketan-style leather hand bag means carrying forward a legacy of ecological responsibility, rural empowerment, and timeless aesthetic. It’s not just a fashion accessory—it’s a handcrafted commitment to art, ethics, and heritage.
