About this Creation
About this Creation
Crafted with patience and purpose, our Handwoven Batik Print Khadi Kaftan Kurta is a celebration of two living traditions brought together in one garment. The base fabric is authentic Khadi cotton, hand-spun and handwoven in the timeless Swadeshi spirit. On it, the ancient art of Batik print brings life through wax, colour, and craft, resulting in a piece that carries centuries of textile wisdom in every motif.
The kaftan silhouette is generous and unhurried, with wide kimono-style sleeves that fall at the elbow and a V-neck with a notch opening at the centre. A drawstring cord ties at the waist, allowing the wearer to define the silhouette or let it flow freely. The fuchsia base carries the characteristic wax-crackle texture of hand-applied Batik, printed with white, black and deep red motifs: bold paisley forms across the upper body, a wide geometric border band at the centre, large circular mandala motifs on the lower body, and a decorative arch border at the hem. Deep black Batik border sections at the sleeves and lower body frame the fuchsia centre with a rich, striking contrast. The breathable nature of handwoven Khadi makes this kaftan kurta ideal for warm weather, long hours, and conscious dressing.
Designed for women who value authenticity over excess, this piece works equally well as relaxed daywear, comfortable homewear, or a statement ethnic outfit for casual gatherings. It offers ease without effort and character without trying.
Each kurta is handwoven and hand-printed, bearing subtle variations in the Batik pattern that are not inconsistencies but proof of the human hands behind every piece, making it truly one of a kind.

STORY BEHIND THIS CRAFT
Two crafts meet in this garment. The first is Khadi, hand-spun and handwoven, rooted in India's freedom movement and its spirit of self-reliance. The second is Batik, a wax-resist printing technique with a presence in India going back centuries, known today through the work of artisans in Bengal, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
The word Batik comes from the Javanese "amba" meaning to write, and "titik" meaning dot. That origin tells you everything about the technique: it is drawing with wax, one deliberate mark at a time. In India, the Batik tradition found a particularly important home in Bengal after Rabindranath Tagore's 1927 visit to Java and Bali, where he brought back Batik tools and fabrics to Kala Bhavana at Shantiniketan, sparking a local tradition that continues to this day. UNESCO recognised Batik's global cultural importance in 2009.
Here's how your Handwoven Batik Print Khadi Kaftan Kurta comes to life:
1. Hand-Spinning the Yarn Natural cotton fibres are spun by hand to create yarn that retains its strength, breathability, and organic texture.
2. Hand Weaving on Traditional Looms The yarn is woven on manual looms by skilled artisans. This slow, rhythmic process produces a fabric that is airy, durable, and uniquely alive.
3. Preparing the Fabric for Batik The woven Khadi is washed and prepared carefully before printing begins. A clean, well-prepared base ensures the wax and dye work in true harmony with the fabric's natural character.
4. Applying the Batik Wax Hot wax is applied onto the fabric using a brush, block, or pen-like canting tool, covering every area that is meant to resist the dye. These wax-covered sections remain the original fabric colour after dyeing. On this kaftan, the white motifs are the areas preserved by wax.
5. Dyeing from Light to Dark The fabric is dyed in cold water, working from the lightest shade to the darkest. Each dye bath builds depth and contrast. The fuchsia body and deep black border sections are achieved through this layered dyeing process.
6. Removing the Wax Once the desired colours are achieved, the fabric is boiled in hot water. The wax melts away, revealing the full pattern beneath: crisp white motifs, the characteristic fine wax-crackle lines across the fuchsia body, and bold black borders with multicolour print detail.
7. Cutting and Tailoring The printed Khadi fabric is cut and stitched by experienced artisans into the kaftan kurta silhouette, complete with a V-neck, elbow-length kimono sleeves, and a drawstring waist cord, all finished with care to preserve the integrity of the Batik pattern across the garment.
Every Handwoven Batik Print Khadi Kaftan Kurta carries within it the labour and knowledge of two separate artisan traditions. It is not fast fashion. It is thoughtful clothing, meant to be worn, lived in, and valued over time.
