Handloom Sarees and Ethnic Wear for Women

Women's ethnic wear carries the work of many hands, from the spinner and the weaver to the painter and the tailor. This collection brings together Taalapatra's handcrafted and handloom apparel for women, from sarees and unstitched dress material to kurtas, kaftans and dresses. Every piece is 100% handcrafted and ethically sourced directly from artisan communities across India. There are no factory lines behind our collections, only looms, brushes and skilled hands.

Handloom Sarees

Sarees in this collection include silk, cotton and Khadi weaves, as well as hand-painted Pattachitra sarees.

Sambalpuri sarees are woven in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh and Balangir districts, Odisha (India). The threads are resist-dyed before weaving, which creates the ikat patterns that define the tradition. Motifs such as Shankha (conch), Chakra (wheel) and Phula (flower) carry symbolism rooted in Odia culture and temple traditions. The Sambalpuri weaving tradition holds a GI tag, which recognises its regional origin and its methods. Bandha sarees carry ikat patterns in the border and pallu, while Body Bandha sarees carry ikat across the full body of the saree.

Khadi is handspun on the charkha and handwoven, a Swadeshi tradition of self-reliance, and the fabric softens with every wash.

Pattachitra dates to the 12th century and is practised in Raghurajpur/Puri district, Odisha (India). Chitrakar families paint mythological and folk narratives by hand, using natural colours made from minerals, plants and lamp soot. On a saree, the tradition becomes wearable art.

Unstitched Dress Material

Unstitched dress material gives you the freedom to choose the cut, the fit and the silhouette. It can be tailored into a kurta, a salwar suit, a blouse or any design you envision, while carrying the texture and pattern character of the handloom weave.

Kurtas, Kaftans and Dresses

Ready-to-wear handloom pieces bring woven fabric into everyday silhouettes, including kurtas, kaftans and dresses. They are made for comfort and elegance, for women who value conscious fashion rooted in India's textile legacy.

Dressing for the Occasion

Handloom apparel suits weddings, festivals, the office and everyday wear. A handcrafted piece carries the identity of a real tradition and supports the artisan family behind it, which a mass-produced garment cannot. Each purchase keeps a craft practised, in line with Taalapatra's mission to be the reason traditions don't die.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the women's apparel collection?
This collection brings together handloom and handcrafted apparel for women from Taalapatra, including silk, cotton, Khadi and Pattachitra sarees, unstitched dress material, kurtas, kaftans and dresses. Every piece is 100% handcrafted.

What is the difference between Bandha and Body Bandha sarees?
Bandha sarees carry ikat patterns in the border and pallu. Body Bandha sarees carry ikat across the full body of the saree.

What is Khadi?
Khadi is handspun on the charkha and handwoven, a Swadeshi tradition of self-reliance. The fabric softens with every wash.

How are Pattachitra sarees made?
Pattachitra sarees are painted by hand by Chitrakar families, using natural colours made from minerals, plants and lamp soot.

Is handloom apparel suitable for gifting and occasions?
Yes. It suits weddings, festivals, corporate gifting and personal milestones, and each piece carries the story of the craft behind it.

Why do handmade garments differ slightly from the photographs?
Every piece is woven or painted by hand, so small variations in colour, texture, weave, brush strokes and finish are the signature of a human hand and not flaws. Handloom fabrics also carry natural slubs. No two pieces are identical. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.

How do I care for handloom and hand-painted garments?
Care depends on the fabric and the craft. Please refer to the Care Guide on the individual product page for specific care instructions.

Can I place a bulk or custom order?
Yes. For bulk orders, corporate gifting or custom requirements, please fill up this form or reach out to us directly and we will be happy to help.
