Handloom Sarees, Fabrics and Apparel from India's Weaving Traditions
Handloom is fabric shaped by hand, one pass of the shuttle at a time. This collection brings together Taalapatra's handloom sarees, unstitched fabric and apparel, woven by artisan communities who carry their craft across generations. Every piece is 100% handcrafted and ethically sourced directly from artisan communities across India. There are no factory lines behind our collections, only looms and skilled hands.
Handloom Sarees
Handloom sarees in this collection include silk, cotton and Khadi weaves, as well as hand-painted Pattachitra sarees. Sambalpuri sarees are woven in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh and Balangir districts, Odisha (India), with threads that are resist-dyed before weaving to form ikat patterns. Motifs such as Shankha (conch), Chakra (wheel) and Phula (flower) carry symbolism rooted in Odia culture and temple traditions. The Sambalpuri weaving tradition holds a GI tag, which recognises its regional origin and its methods.
Khadi is handspun on the charkha and handwoven, a Swadeshi tradition of self-reliance, and the fabric softens with every wash. Pattachitra dates to the 12th century and is practised in Raghurajpur/Puri district, Odisha (India), where Chitrakar families paint by hand using natural colours made from minerals, plants and lamp soot.
Unstitched Handloom Fabric
Unstitched handloom fabric and dress material give you the freedom to choose the cut, the fit and the silhouette. It can be tailored into a kurta, a salwar suit, a blouse or any design you envision, while carrying the texture and pattern character of the weave.
Women's Handloom Apparel
Handloom apparel for women brings woven fabric into ready-to-wear silhouettes, including kurtas, kaftans and dresses. These pieces are made for comfort and elegance, for those who value conscious fashion rooted in India's textile legacy.
Men's Handloom Apparel
Handwoven shirts and jackets bring handloom fabric into modern menswear. Woven on traditional looms, they suit festive occasions, the office and everyday wear, and each carries the texture and character of a handloom weave.
Why Choose Handloom
Handloom fabric carries depth, texture and character that reflect the hand that made it. It suits weddings, festivals and everyday wear, and it makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who values things made by hand. Each purchase supports the artisan families who keep these traditions practised, in line with Taalapatra's mission to be the reason traditions don't die.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in the handloom collection?
This collection brings together handloom sarees, unstitched fabric and apparel from Taalapatra, including silk, cotton and Khadi weaves and hand-painted Pattachitra pieces. Every piece is 100% handcrafted.
What is ikat?
Ikat is a technique in which threads are resist-dyed before weaving, so the pattern forms as the fabric is woven.
What is Khadi?
Khadi is handspun on the charkha and handwoven, a Swadeshi tradition of self-reliance. The fabric softens with every wash.
What is Poly Khadi?
Poly Khadi is a blend that includes polyester. Please refer to the individual product page for fibre details.
Is handloom suitable for gifting?
Yes. It suits weddings, festivals, corporate gifting and personal milestones, and each piece carries the story of the weaving tradition behind it.
Why do handloom pieces differ slightly from the photographs?
Every piece is woven or painted by hand, so small variations in colour, texture, weave, brush strokes and finish are the signature of a human hand and not flaws. Handloom fabrics also carry natural slubs. No two pieces are identical. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.
How do I care for handloom fabric?
Care depends on the fabric and the weave. Please refer to the Care Guide on the individual product page for specific care instructions.
Can I place a bulk or custom order?
Yes. For bulk orders, corporate gifting or custom requirements, please fill up this form or reach out to us directly and we will be happy to help.
