Handcrafted Indian Wall Decor: Art Made to Last on Your Walls
A wall piece is not furniture. It does not move, and it does not wear out the way a fabric or a vessel does. What goes on a wall stays there, often for years, which means the question of what it carries matters more than with almost any other object in a home. This collection gathers wall art made by Indian artisans using craft traditions that have produced paintings, engravings, and decorative objects for centuries: Pattachitra on cloth, canvas, silk, and wood; palm leaf engraved paintings; straw craft paintings; and handcrafted bamboo and wooden wall hangings. Each piece is made by hand, carries a narrative or a motif drawn from Indian visual and cultural heritage, and is designed to be read and lived with over time.
Pattachitra
Pattachitra is Odisha's signature art form: intricate mythological narratives hand-painted using natural colours derived from minerals, plants, and lamp soot. The word comes from the Sanskrit Patta (cloth) and Chitra (picture). The tradition is closely tied to the Jagannath Temple at Puri and the heritage village of Raghurajpur, Puri district, Odisha (India), and is practised by families of Chitrakars who have inherited this craft across generations. In this collection, Pattachitra appears on cloth and Tussar silk as standalone paintings, and also hand-painted directly onto wooden tray and wall hanging forms that serve as dual-purpose display pieces. The subjects span the full range of the tradition: scenes from the Rath Yatra and Suna Besha festivals of Lord Jagannath, Radha Krishna in various narrative moments, Vishnu Dasavatara, dancing figures, peacocks, and the Saura tribal art vocabulary, which depicts nature, rituals, and tribal deities through symbolic figures and geometric forms.
Palm Leaf Engraved Paintings
Palm leaf paintings, known as Talapatra Chitra, are one of India's most ancient art forms: stories etched onto treated palm leaves using iron styluses and natural ink, connecting the viewer to a tradition that predates paper in the Indian subcontinent. In this collection, palm leaf engraved wall hangings carry a wide range of subjects: Lord Ganesha, Lord Buddha, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Maha Laxmi, Lord Jagannath with Vishnu Dasavataras, Radha Krishna, Tree of Life, and Ramayana scenes, among others. Pieces are available in monochrome and in colour, and in framed and unframed formats. The engraved line on palm leaf has a character entirely distinct from a painted or printed line, and it holds its definition well over time.
Straw Craft Paintings and Bamboo Wall Hangings
Straw craft paintings are composed from golden paddy straw arranged and fixed to create pictorial compositions: a technique that produces images with a distinctive warm, textural quality. The bamboo strip wall hanging in this collection features handcarved wooden depictions of the Vishnu Dashavatara mounted on a bamboo base, combining two craft materials in a single wall piece. As the collection grows, it will include wall art in additional craft traditions and materials.
Framed and Unframed
Many pieces in this collection are available in both framed and unframed formats. Framed pieces are ready to hang. Unframed pieces can be framed to personal preference or displayed as they are. Each product page specifies which format is available and carries dimensions.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
What craft traditions and materials does this collection cover?
This collection includes Pattachitra paintings on cloth, Tussar silk, canvas, and wood; palm leaf engraved paintings; straw craft paintings; and bamboo and wooden wall hangings with carved or painted motifs. Each product page carries specific craft tradition, material, and dimension details. Both framed and unframed pieces are available across the range.
What subjects and motifs appear across this collection?
Pieces draw from the narrative and visual vocabulary of Odisha's traditional art: Jagannath culture including the Rath Yatra and Suna Besha, Radha Krishna, Vishnu Dasavatara, Ganesha, Lord Buddha, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Maha Laxmi, the Ramayana, the Tree of Life, Saura and tribal art forms, peacocks, and dancing figures. Individual product pages carry subject details for each piece.
What is the difference between a Pattachitra painting and a palm leaf engraved painting?
Pattachitra is hand-painted using natural colours derived from minerals, plants, and lamp soot, onto cloth, Tussar silk, canvas, or wood. Palm leaf engraved paintings are etched by hand using an iron stylus onto treated palm leaves. The resulting line quality, texture, and visual character of the two are entirely different. Both traditions come from Odisha and share deep roots in the same cultural heritage.
Will my piece look exactly like the one in the photograph?
Not exactly. Each piece is handmade and carries natural variation in colour, painted or engraved line quality, surface texture, and overall character intrinsic to the process. Hand-painted colours may shift slightly between pieces and in different lighting conditions. Photographs are taken under controlled lighting and may appear differently across screen settings and devices. These are not defects. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.
How do I care for my wall decor piece?
Please refer to the Care Guide on the individual product page for specific care instructions, as requirements vary by material and craft type.
Can I place a bulk or custom order for wall decor pieces?
