Bio Crafts — Made From What the Earth Provides

Before synthetic materials existed, every object in an Indian home was made from what the surrounding landscape offered. Wood from the forest. Grass from the riverbank. Palm leaves from the grove. Horn from animals that had lived their lives. Paper folded from waste cloth and fibre. The artisans who worked these materials did not think of them as limitations — they understood them deeply, knew how each behaved under a blade or a brush or a flame, and shaped them into objects of remarkable beauty and utility. This collection gathers crafts made entirely from natural, biological materials — horn, lacquer, bamboo, wood, palm leaf, straw, paper mache, shell, and more — each worked by hand by artisan communities who have inherited this knowledge across generations.

What These Materials Are and Where They Come From

Each material in this collection has its own origin, character, and making process. Horn craft pieces are carved and shaped from animal horn — a material that is dense, warm to the touch, and capable of holding extraordinary fine detail. Lacquer craft involves applying layers of natural lacquer onto a wooden or bamboo base, built up and shaped on a spinning wheel by artisans in Odisha (India) — vivid colours and folk motifs are the signature of this tradition. Bamboo and wood pieces are carved, turned, and hand-painted — wood craft in Odisha carries a long tradition of painting folk and tribal motifs directly onto the surface. Palm leaf craft uses seasoned palm leaves — treated and prepared by hand — as the surface for engraved paintings and functional objects; the same material that ancient texts and horoscopes were recorded on across centuries. Straw craft, including Sabai grass baskets, uses natural grass coiled and stitched into functional forms — a cottage tradition practised primarily by women across Odisha. Paper mache objects are built from layered waste paper and natural fibres, shaped by hand and painted with folk motifs. Shell and conch craft involves hand-painting and carving the sacred Shankha — a material with deep ritual significance across Indian traditions. Golden Grass (Kaincha) items are handwoven from a wild grass that grows in the marshy riverside areas of Odisha, named for the golden lustre it develops upon drying.

What these materials share is that they are all drawn from the natural world, worked without industrial processes, and shaped by hands that understand the material from years of practice. They are also, without exception, biodegradable.

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Bio Craft Piece

Natural material variation — every natural material has inherent variation in colour, grain, texture, and surface character. No two pieces made from horn, wood, bamboo, or palm leaf are ever identical. Surface character — hand-carved, hand-painted, and hand-woven surfaces carry the marks of the tools and hands that made them. Minor irregularities are intrinsic to the process. Functional and decorative use — many pieces in this collection serve both purposes; product pages carry specific usage notes and dimensions.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

What kinds of crafts does this collection include?

This collection includes horn craft, lacquer craft, bamboo craft, wood craft, palm leaf craft, straw and grass craft, paper mache, shell and conch craft, and Golden Grass items — all made from natural biological materials entirely by hand. Each product page carries details specific to the material and craft tradition of that piece.

Why are these called "bio crafts"?

The term reflects that every material in this collection is natural and biological in origin — drawn from the plant or animal world rather than manufactured synthetically. All materials are biodegradable and have been used in Indian craft traditions for centuries before industrial alternatives existed.

Will my piece look exactly like the one in the photograph?

Not exactly. Each piece is made from natural material and handcrafted, carrying variations in colour, texture, grain, and surface finish intrinsic to both the material and the making process. Product photographs are taken under controlled lighting and may appear differently across various screen settings and devices. These are not defects — they are what makes each piece genuinely one of a kind. Read our Disclaimer before purchase.

How do I identify an authentic handmade bio craft piece?

Authentic handmade bio craft carries the natural character of its material — the grain of wood, the translucency of horn, the texture of woven grass, the irregularity of hand-applied lacquer. These qualities are distinctly different from machine-made or resin-cast imitations. When in doubt about any piece in our collection, feel free to reach out to us before purchasing.

How do I care for my bio craft piece?

Please refer to the Care Guide on your product page for specific care instructions.

Can I place a bulk or personalised order for bio craft pieces?
