Originally used as a medium for sacred texts and epic storytelling, palm leaves served as the earliest form of manuscripts in India, long before paper existed.
This craft flourished in temple towns like Puri and Raghurajpur, where artisans—often trained from childhood—would etch mythological scenes, deities, and folklore onto dried palm leaves using a fine iron stylus. After engraving, the etched lines are rubbed with natural black ink made from burnt coconut shells and turmeric, revealing incredibly detailed illustrations in a striking black-on-beige contrast.
