STORY BEHIND THIS CRAFT
The story of Sambalpuri handloom is as rich and enduring as the fabric itself. Rooted in the western region of Odisha—particularly in districts like Bargarh, Sonepur, and Sambalpur—this craft dates back over a thousand years. But it gained national recognition in the 20th century for its unique Ikat dyeing technique, where each thread is tie-dyed by hand before weaving, resulting in intricate motifs that are symmetrical on both sides of the fabric.
These designs—often inspired by nature, traditional temple architecture, and tribal art—carry deep cultural meaning. Unlike printed textiles, every pattern in Sambalpuri Ikat is woven into the cloth itself, making it unfadeable and timeless.
Here’s how your Sambalpuri Cotton Shirt is made:
1. Yarn Selection & Preparation
Fine cotton yarn is selected and prepared by hand. Artisans then meticulously measure and map the design directly onto the yarn bundles.
2. Tie-Dye Technique (Ikat)
Using a technique known as Bandha, threads are tightly tied in specific areas to resist dye. This resist-dyeing is repeated in multiple stages depending on the complexity of the design and number of colours.
3. Dyeing the Yarn
The tied yarn bundles are dyed using azo-free, eco-friendly colours. Between each stage, the yarn is untied, retied, and redyed to layer the pattern—creating the signature blurred edges unique to Ikat.
4. Hand Weaving on Traditional Looms
Once dyed, the yarn is mounted onto handlooms. Skilled weavers then carefully weave the pre-patterned threads into fabric, matching dyed segments with perfect precision. This stage demands both mathematical accuracy and artistic intuition.
5. Stitching into Shirts
The finished handwoven fabric is then cut and tailored into classic half sleeve shirts by local artisans, maintaining the integrity of the design while ensuring a comfortable, breathable fit.
Every Handwoven Sambalpuri Cotton Shirt you wear carries this legacy—from the rhythmic click of the loom to the wisdom passed down through generations. It’s not just fashion. It’s wearable heritage, created with patience, precision, and pride.
