This isn’t just a shirt—it’s a piece of living heritage. Our Handwoven Sambalpuri Cotton Men’s Half Sleeve Shirt with Pasapalli Design brings together the elegance of fine cotton and the soul of Odisha’s legendary weaving tradition.
Named after the Odia word “pasa”, meaning chess or dice, the Pasapalli pattern is a striking checkerboard design traditionally associated with symmetry, balance, and cultural symbolism. Woven entirely by hand using the intricate Ikat technique, where each yarn is tie-dyed before weaving, the result is a bold, reversible pattern that never fades—because the design is not printed, but woven into the very soul of the fabric.
Crafted by master weavers in the western districts of Odisha, this shirt combines 100% handwoven cotton with a breathable, soft texture that’s ideal for year-round wear. The half sleeve cut and relaxed fit bring effortless ease, while the Pasapalli motifs add a statement of identity, tradition, and pride.
This is not fast fashion. It’s slow-made style—stitched with intention, rooted in artistry, and respectful of the past. Whether you wear it to work, a celebration, or a casual day out, this shirt makes a quiet yet powerful impression.

STORY BEHIND THIS CRAFT
The Pasapalli design—derived from the word “pasa”, meaning dice or chessboard—has long been a symbol of balance, symmetry, and tradition in Odisha’s rich textile heritage. It belongs to the celebrated Sambalpuri Ikat weaving tradition, a craft that has been passed down through generations in the weaving heartlands of western Odisha, particularly in Bargarh, Sonepur, and Sambalpur.
What sets Pasapalli apart isn’t just its bold checkerboard layout, but how it’s made—not printed, but meticulously woven into the fabric using the rare and laborious double Ikat (Bandha) technique. This makes the design visible and identical on both sides, a true testament to artisan mastery.
How a Pasapalli Shirt is Made:
1. Yarn Selection & Preparation
Fine cotton yarns are chosen for both warp (vertical threads) and weft (horizontal threads). These are measured and stretched on frames to prepare for the design.
2. Tie-Dye Patterning (Bandha)
Artisans tightly tie small sections of yarn using thread, based on a mapped-out Pasapalli layout. These ties resist dye, forming the base of the checkerboard design.
3. Multi-Stage Dyeing
The yarns are dyed in natural or azo-free dyes, untied, retied, and redyed as needed to achieve multi-coloured geometric patterns. This process can take days—or even weeks—depending on the complexity.
4. Hand Weaving on Looms
Once dyed, the yarn is aligned on handlooms, where the artisan must match the pre-dyed sections with absolute precision. This careful weaving results in perfectly aligned, symmetrical designs on both sides of the fabric.
5. Cutting & Tailoring
The finished fabric is then cut and stitched into half sleeve shirts, designed for everyday comfort and cultural expression.
