Our Lacquer Craft Wall Hangings are more than just décor—they’re handcrafted emblems of folk heritage, lovingly shaped and polished by artisans who have preserved this vibrant tradition for generations.

Originating from the culturally rich regions of Nayagarh and Cuttack, Odisha’s lacquer craft is a centuries-old art form where natural resins meet hand-turned wooden surfaces to create bright, glossy, and colorful masterpieces. These wall hangings are crafted with the same time-honored care—each piece bringing together hand-carved wooden forms and layers of richly pigmented lacquer, applied and burnished entirely by hand.

What makes these pieces truly special is the level of detail and devotion in every curve, color, and motif. From floral medallions and tribal patterns to auspicious symbols and folk designs, each wall hanging is a fusion of spiritual expression and folk identity, meant to enliven spaces with meaning, beauty, and tradition.

These are not factory-made prints or machine-molded decor items. They are authentic, slow-crafted works of art, shaped patiently over days, using wooden lathes, natural lacquer, and the artisan’s practiced hand. The result is a product that not only adds life to your walls but also tells a story of India’s cultural soul.

Whether displayed in your living room, entryway, workspace, or pooja corner, these lacquer wall hangings bring warmth, vibrancy, and a handmade soul to any space.

Each piece is a tribute to the artisan’s skill, the legacy of Odisha’s lacquer tradition, and the harmony between art, nature, and everyday living.

STORY BEHIND THIS CRAFT

The tradition of lacquer craft in Odisha dates back centuries and is deeply rooted in the artistic communities of Nayagarh and Cuttack districts. Originally used to decorate toys, combs, and ritual items, this vibrant craft evolved into the creation of decorative and spiritual wall art, becoming a symbol of folk identity, cultural storytelling, and sustainable design.

Passed down through generations, lacquer craft is celebrated for its bold colors, glossy finish, and intricate motifs, all created without the use of modern machinery. The artisans use natural resins, mineral pigments, and hand-turned wooden bases, making each piece a true work of functional art. The detailed process is as as below:

1. Wood Preparation
A solid piece of locally sourced softwood is cut and shaped by hand or on a traditional wooden lathe to form the base of the wall hanging—circular, oval, or custom-carved.

2. Lacquer Application
Natural resin (lac) is melted and mixed with mineral or vegetable-based dyes to create vibrant colors. The artisan applies the lacquer to the rotating wood, layering different shades as they work.

3. Pattern Creation
Using a thin stick or metal stylus, the artisan etches or builds up spiral motifs, tribal patterns, floral medallions, or other traditional designs while the lacquer is still warm and malleable.

4. Polishing and Buffing
Once dried, the surface is hand-polished using a soft cloth, palm leaf, or even bamboo shavings, giving the wall hanging its signature glass-like sheen.

5. Final Finishing
The finished piece is inspected for symmetry, shine, and detail. Hooks or hanging mechanisms are then added, completing a handmade artwork that honors both tradition and function.

Dust Gently | Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe the surface and remove dust without scratching the lacquer finish.

Avoid Harsh Cleaners | Do not use chemical sprays, bleach, or alcohol-based cleaners, as they can damage the lacquer and fade the colors.

Wipe Carefully | For light cleaning, use a barely damp cloth. Gently dab—do not rub—the surface, especially over painted or detailed areas.

Do Not Soak | Never immerse the wall hanging in water or clean under running water. Excess moisture can damage the lacquer and wood.

Keep Away from Moisture | Display only in dry indoor areas. Humidity can dull the lacquer and weaken the wood over time.

Avoid Direct Sunlight | Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause the lacquer colors to fade or the wood to warp slightly.

Handle with Care | Though durable, the piece is handcrafted. Avoid dropping or placing under pressure to preserve shape and finish.

Store Safely | If not on display, wrap the wall hanging in soft cloth and store in a cool, dry place to protect it from dust and light.
