Our Palm Leaf Engraved Painting Wall Hangings are more than just decorative pieces—they’re etched legacies of storytelling, meticulously hand-engraved and inked by master artisans of this sacred and timeless craft.

This traditional art form, known as Tala Pattachitra, dates back over a thousand years and is one of India’s oldest forms of manuscript illustration. Artisans use dried and treated palm leaves as their canvas, carefully etching intricate mythological scenes, deities, and folk tales with an iron stylus. Once engraved, the etchings are hand-inked with natural pigments, creating stunning black-on-beige contrasts that bring every detail to life.

What makes these wall hangings truly special is the devotion behind each line. From epic narratives like the Ramayana and Mahabharata to meditative motifs of Lord Jagannath, every artwork is a slow-crafted masterpiece, created entirely by hand using traditional tools and centuries-old techniques.

These are not factory prints or replicas. Each panel is authentic, hand-etched art, formed through hours—or even days—of focused craftsmanship. Mounted and framed for easy display, these wall hangings make a bold yet soulful statement in any room, blending heritage with quiet elegance.

Whether adorning your meditation corner, enhancing your living room, or gifted as a cultural keepsake, this Palm Leaf Engraved Painting from Odisha carries the spirit of India’s storytelling traditions—etched in nature, framed in reverence, and cherished for generations.

Each piece is a tribute to the artisan’s skill, their connection to nature, and the power of visual storytelling in its purest form.

STORY BEHIND THIS CRAFT

The art of palm leaf engraving, known locally as Tala Pattachitra, is one of Odisha’s most ancient and revered craft traditions, with roots dating back over a thousand years. Originally used as a medium for sacred texts and epic storytelling, palm leaves served as the earliest form of manuscripts in India, long before paper existed.

This craft flourished in temple towns like Puri and Raghurajpur, where artisans—often trained from childhood—would etch mythological scenes, deities, and folklore onto dried palm leaves using a fine iron stylus. After engraving, the etched lines are rubbed with natural black ink made from burnt coconut shells and turmeric, revealing incredibly detailed illustrations in a striking black-on-beige contrast.

Each panel is made from carefully selected, sun-dried Talapatra (palm leaf) that is treated for durability. These are then cut, strung, or mounted into scrolls or frames to be preserved as religious scriptures, decorative art, or heirlooms.

Today, this tradition has evolved into wall-ready artwork—still entirely handmade and deeply rooted in Odisha’s storytelling culture. Modern Tala Pattachitra continues to depict stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and local legends, keeping alive a sacred form of visual scripture through a sustainable, natural medium.

Every engraved painting is not only a visual masterpiece but a reflection of Odisha’s spiritual, artistic, and ecological legacy—crafted without machines, with reverence for both nature and narrative.

Dust the Glass Surface Regularly | Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe the glass and keep your wall art clean and clear.

Keep Away from Moisture | Hang in a dry indoor area. Avoid placement near kitchens, bathrooms, or damp walls, as moisture may affect the artwork inside the frame.

Do Not Spray Cleaners Directly on Glass | Spray a glass cleaner on the cloth, not directly on the frame, to prevent liquid from seeping in and damaging the palm leaf.

Avoid Direct Sunlight | Continuous exposure to strong sunlight can fade the natural ink and discolor the palm leaf. Display in shaded or indirect-light areas.

Mount Securely | Ensure the wall hanging is fixed properly with stable hooks or nails to support the weight of the glass frame and prevent accidental falls.

Handle with Care During Placement | When installing or moving, hold the piece from both sides to avoid putting stress on the glass or backing.

Avoid Strong Airflow & Fragrances | Do not place near air conditioners, diffusers, or aerosol sprays, which could introduce moisture or chemicals into the frame.

Store Properly if Needed | If taken down for storage, wrap securely in soft cloth or bubble wrap and place upright in a cool, dry area.
